New analysis from security company Auckland CCTV has found that burglars are most likely to strike in the city’s centre.

The Auckland-based company has compiled a report on burglary activity after analysing police data for all 23,225 burglaries committed in New Zealand’s biggest city last year.

Here’s a breakdown of the top ten areas targeted by burglars in 2022:

1.      Auckland Central

It may be no surprise that Auckland Central is the most burgled area in Auckland. With 787 break in attempts over 2022, it takes the top spot by a mile.

2.      Takanini South

Going across the city to south Auckland, Takanini South is in the runner up position with 290 break in attempts. Wedged between Manurewa and Papakura, this area is home to both residential dwellings and decently developed commercial zones, both suffering from the intrusions.

3.      Mount Wellington South

Despite being right next to the police station on the Ellerslie-Panmure Highway, Mount Wellington South nonetheless takes the third spot with 244 break in attempts.

With the Southern Motorway running through it and a busy commercial district, this area sees a lot of traffic during the day and night.

4.      Auckland Harbourside

Bordering Auckland Central, and almost a northern extension of the Central area, the waterfront is surprisingly in 4th place. Despite being home to many high-end hotels and restaurants and an appearance of yachts and sunshine, it has still sustained 207 break in attempts.

5.      Pukekohe North

All the way at the south of the Auckland Region bordering Waikato is Pukekohe North. This half of Pukekohe received 200 break in attempts over 2022, and caps off the Top 5 most burgled areas.

Being made up of mostly residential dwellings and a small but bustling central shops area, the majority of the victims here will be homeowners.

6.      Otahuhu West

Otahuhu is a highly industrial area with countless warehouses and distribution centres, being right next to a rail hub. Towards the southern end of this area is the prestigious Kings College, which may be unexpected in such a small area with 193 break in attempts.

7.      Homai East

Homai East is a small suburban section of Manurewa, consisting mostly of private homes and not many businesses at all. Housing Manurewa Intermediate school, it may be worrying for anyone planning to move to this zone to learn it has sustained 186 break in attempts in 2022.

8.      Henderson South

Going back across town, Henderson South is the first and only area in this Top 10 list found in West Auckland. With 176 break in attempts, the businesses and homeowners in this area should be aware and take safety precautions before moving in.

9.      Parnell West

One of the big surprises on this list. With 171 break in attempts, Parnell West which is usually thought of as a wealthy, high end relaxed neighbourhood with a beautiful main street, turns out to be a hotbed of burglaries. Its proximity to Auckland Central could be a key factor to this amount of crime in an otherwise lavish area.

10.   Tamaki

The last area on this list, not too far from Mount Wellington, is Tamaki. Overlapping with Panmure, and sitting on the Tamaki river bank, this small area carries 164 break in attempts. Just like Mount Wellington, in spite of the nearby police station, it is nonetheless a highly concentrated area of burglaries.
